Lisbon, Portugal

Save
Low · Tram 28 is crowded (sample)

Walk downhill sections instead of boarding at the first stop.

Overview

Lisbon is hills and trams, not one tram-28 loop that skips Belém. Alfama, the Sé, and the castle share the east slope; Baixa and Praça do Comércio sit below. Chiado and Bairro Alto are the same grid at dusk. Belém (Jerónimos, the tower) is a west tram or train cluster, never a walk from the castle after a full Alfama morning. Sintra is a booked rail day, not a same-day add-on after Pastéis de Belém. A 24h ticket plus walking beats stacking tuk-tuks. Hills need shoes with grip. Atlantic wind on the tower is the weather, not a surprise.

Highlights: March–June and September–October for hills without peak heat.

Walk Alfama and Baixa; tram/train for Belém. Rail for Sintra.

Watch tram 28 pickpockets. Zip bags on the castle slope at dusk.

Emergency: 112 / 112 · 112 works in most of Europe/Asia roaming.

Tips

Accessibility

Hills, cobbles, tram steps

Walk downhill; tram uphill. Many miradouros are stairs-only.

Budget

Pastéis and a tram hop

A neighborhood counter in Graça is the cheap lunch. Walk downhill.

Couples

Miradouro dusk with a layer

A windy viewpoint plus a late table in Graça beats a Rua Augusta grill.

Culture

Fado is a room, not a street show

Talk after the song. A simple obrigado at the pastelaria is noticed.

Emergency

112 for police and medical

112 works. A pharmacy duty sign is on the door. Keep a hotel card.

Family

Belém tram, not tram 28 as a commute

Pastéis and the river beat a packed 28 with a stroller.

Food

Pastéis where the line is local

A neighborhood counter in Graça beats a translated grill on Rua Augusta.

Internet

eSIM before the hills

Buy data before you need maps in Alfama alleys.

Local rules

Let people off the tram first

Validate Viva Viagem. A simple obrigado at the pastelaria is noticed.

Luxury

One Sintra day, booked, not a scramble

Pay for the train and a palace slot. Skip stacking three viewpoints in a taxi.

Money

Cards in the Baixa, cash in kiosks

Pastelarias often tap; some miradouro kiosks still want coins.

Packing

Shoes with grip

Cobbles plus tram tracks. A wind layer for Belém, not just a T-shirt.

Safety

Tram 28 crowded doors

Zip bags at the first stop. Hills are pickpocket hours, not dark alleys.

Scams

Tram 28 crowded-door hands

Zip at the first stop. Skip unmarked tuk-tuks at Rossio.

SIM

eSIM before the hills

Activate before Alfama alleys. Tram wifi is not a plan.

Solo

Graça counter for one

A pastelaria stool is easy. Stick to lit streets after the last tram.

Transport

24h Viva Viagem

Tram 28 is a postcard, not a commute. Walk downhill; tram uphill when legs are done.

Visa

Schengen on the Atlantic

Passport validity and visa type change; confirm before you book Sintra trains.

Weather

Atlantic wind on the hills

Riverfront feels warmer than Alfama. A layer for sunset at a miradouro.
