Book Colosseum slots the day before.

Overview

Rome is a compact historic core with one west hop: Colosseum and Forum in one morning, Pantheon and Trevi on the same grid, Vatican a timed afternoon across the river — not a walk you start after a full Forum day. Trastevere is an evening cluster, not a lunch dash from the ticket office. Ostia or Tivoli are booked day trips, never same-day walks from the Colosseum. Metro A/B plus walking beats taxis in the centro. Book the big tickets. July stone reflects heat; fountains are for water bottles, not a picnic on the steps. A short rain still fills the indoor halls.

Highlights: April–June and September–October before or after peak heat.

Walk the centro; metro A/B for Vatican. Trains for Ostia.

Zip bags on metro A and around Trevi. Skip unmarked taxis at termini.

Emergency: 112 / 112 · 112 works in most of Europe/Asia roaming.

Tips

Accessibility

Cobbles and metro A/B lifts

Centro storico is uneven. Colosseum has an accessible route — book it.

Budget

Pizza al taglio, not Forum carbonara

A slice and a park beat a photo menu on Via dei Fori.

Couples

Trastevere after the Forum closes

A late table away from Via dei Fori beats a sunset scrum at the Colosseum fence.

Culture

No picnic on church steps

Dress for basilicas. Aperitivo is standing with a small plate, not a full dinner.

Emergency

112 and 118 medical

112 works. A pharmacy night rota is posted on the door. Keep a hotel card.

Family

Villa Borghese buffer day

The park and gallery beat a second Vatican morning with tired kids.

Food

Carbonara away from the Forum

A Roman lunch queue in Testaccio beats a photo menu on Via dei Fori.

Internet

eSIM before Termini wifi

Buy data before you need maps in metro mezzanines.

Local rules

Cover shoulders in basilicas

No picnic on church steps. Validate the ATAC ticket on the first bus.

Luxury

One booked Vatican slot plus a real table

Pay for timed entry and dinner in Testaccio, not a hotel rooftop tourist menu.

Money

Cards yes, cash for tiny bars

Tap in trattorie; keep coins for some church donations and water fountains are free.

Packing

Sun and a modest layer

July stone radiates. Shoulders covered for St Peter’s; a hat beats extra shirts.

Safety

Crowds at the Forum fence

Zip bags on tram 8 and around Termini. Pickpockets follow tour flags, not alleys.

Scams

Friendship-bracelet sellers at the Forum

A bracelet on your wrist is a bill. Zip bags at Termini and tram 8.

SIM

eSIM before Termini

Activate before you need maps in metro mezzanines. Station wifi is a last resort.

Solo

Testaccio lunch for one

A trattoria counter is normal. Stick to lit streets after the last metro.

Transport

24h or 48h ATAC ticket

Validate on the first bus. Metro A/B cover the core; walk the centro storico.

Visa

Schengen still applies

Passport validity and visa type change; confirm before you book the Colosseum slot.

Weather

Shade after 13:00 in summer

Do interiors mid-day in July. Fountains are for filling bottles, not soaking.
